One year after the release of the Future of Nursing 2030 report, we will convene to take stock of the work done so far and consider the road ahead of nurses charting a path to achieve health equity.

For our country to advance health equity for all, the systems that educate, pay and employ nurses need to permanently remove barriers to allow them to do this work, value their contributions, prepare them to understand and tackle these issues, and diversify the nursing workforce.

Future of Nursing 2020 2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity
On May 11, 2021 the National Academy of Medicine released another groundbreaking on how the profession of nursing can help the United States make progress in the long struggle for health equity. The report, Future of Nursing 2020 2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity, advances new goals that build on the themes of the first Future of Nursing report. The expert committee extended the vision for the nursing profession into 2030 and charts a path for the nursing profession to help our nation create a culture of health, reduce health disparities, and improve the health and well-being of the U.S. population in the 21st century. The committee considered newly emerging evidence related to the COVID-19 global pandemic and include recommendations regarding the role of nurses in responding to the crisis created by a pandemic.

Recommendations at a Glance was developed for the Center to Champion Nursing America, an initiative of AARP Foundation, AARP and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, by InnovationPoint, LLC, under the leadership of Soren Kaplan, PhD, InnovationPoint founder. It is anchored in the nine overarching recommendations (54 sub-recommendations) within the new Future of Nursing Report.
Action Plans: Examples from the Field
On June 3 and 4, 2021, the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action assembled key opinion leaders, experts, and change makers across the fields of health care, nursing and health equity. The goal: Build actions plans to operationalize the National Academy of Medicine’s Future of Nursing 2020 2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity report. The draft workplans are examples of how each recommendation may be addressed.
