Passing the Baton

Donna E. Shalala, PhD, and Mary K. Wakefield, PhD, RN, share a unique role in the history of nursing. Shalala led the study committee that produced the first future of nursing report in 2010, the Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health. Wakefield and David R. Williams, PhD, MPH, co-chair the study committee of the National Academy of Medicine’s second future of nursing report. That is expected to be released in May and serve as a blueprint to advance health equity through nursing for the next decade.

In this four-and-a-half minute video, created for the Campaign’s Feb. 24 meeting, the Future of Nursing: Passion, Purpose and Progress, Shalala and Wakefield reflect on the impact of the first study, consider the effects of the pandemic on nursing and look ahead to the future as they pass the baton from one study leader to the next.
