State Implementation Program

Phase: SIP 2

Alaska: Building a Nursing Coalition in the Last Frontier

Project Accomplishments:

This project addressed the IOM’s Future of Nursing report by working to remove scope of practice barriers. The project drafted language for statutory changes; and educated the public and legislators on APRN roles and ensuring that nursing statutes were updated by 2015.

The project also focused on preparing and enabling nurses to lead change to advance health by implementing a leadership development program to serve nurses at all levels. The project  accomplished this initiative by conducting a statewide needs assessment, developing educational programs that include an emphasis on inter-professional collaboration, communication, persuasion, team building, advocacy/leadership, and implementing mentoring programs.
