The Nevada Action Coalition serves as the driving force for transforming health care through nursing in our state. Recognizing the important work already underway in Nevada and with a goal of long-term sustainable change, the Nevada Action Coalition leads the way to improve the health of the population.

Features

Education

Where and how health care is delivered is changing.  Nevada nurses can play a tremendous role in delivering high quality care. Our goal is to increase the number of nurses with higher degrees so they can provide 21st century care. 

Progress

We are looking at ways to help nurses progress seamlessly from associate to bachelor and higher degrees in nursing. This means removing barriers that make it cumbersome and difficult for nurses to obtain higher levels of education. One strategy that Nevada has embraced is online nursing education. Current activities include extension of nurse residencies throughout the state, leadership training, a legislative effort to remove of scope of practice barriers, and a "BSN in 10 initiative" which would help RNs to earn a bachelor's degree within 10 years of licensure.

The goal is to bring all stakeholders under the umbrella of the Action Coalition, uniting to achieve common strategic goals.

Leadership

Nurses bring a unique, important perspective to health care, higher education, business and policy. Some leadership opportunities exist in Nevada, but there is no concerted effort to place nurses in key leadership positions; moreover, Nevada has no nurse legislators.

Progress

The Nevada Action Coalition is committed to developing future nurse leaders. Nevada is a largely rural state with two large urban areas (Reno and Las Vegas) located at opposite ends of the state. In order for the Action Coalition to be successful, stakeholders in all areas of the state are being recruited and their opinions valued. Nurse leaders in regulation, education, and clinical practice have embraced the the charge to transform healthcare through nursing and have committed to working together to achieve our shared goals.

Practice

Nevada’s laws and regulations hamper access to high quality care provided by advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs).

Progress

Legislation was passed in 2011 to require national certification for APRNs. This is the first step toward meeting the requirements of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing Consensus Model for APRN Regulation, which enhances mobility and utilization of patient care services provided by APRNs, many of whom are the only providers of health care services in local areas. Statutory autonomy will decrease barriers to provision of care and will increase access to care for patients.

Interprofessional Collaboration

Nevada’s relatively small population means that many key stakeholders are already collaborating on efforts to improve health care in the state. But to see true transformation of health care, we must engage a wider cadre of stakeholders.

Progress

We are building on previously established networks to reach new stakeholders, facilitating collaboration among nursing and business organizations on a shared vision and strategic plan to advance the our goals.

Diversity

In Nevada, our population is becoming increasingly diverse and many residents have unique health care needs. Increased diversity of the health care workforce is necessary to reflect these changing dynamics.

Progress

Our leadership organizations represent diverse health care organizations and educational systems and are the major influential health care leaders within Nevada. We will work with our colleagues throughout the state to develop partnerships with minority communities to facilitate interest into nursing and to educate all nurses in addressing community health needs.

Data

Workforce data serves as the foundation for transforming the health care delivery system. However, because Nevada does not have a nursing workforce center, we lack a formal mechanism to collect and analyze statewide data to project current and future needs.

Progress

To address this challenge, we have partnered with the University of Nevada School of Medicine and the Nevada State Higher Education and Department of Employment Training and Rehabilitation, which are leading collaboratives effort to establish minimum data sets for occupations identified by Nevada Healthcare Sector Council.
