The Connecticut Nursing Collaborative-Action Coalition (CNC-AC) is partnering with the state’s Department of Labor and Department of Public Health to manage and analyze Connecticut’s nursing workforce data.  The analysis will provide critical information for ongoing planning around the health of Connecticut residents, development of the nursing workforce and the state economy.

“The collective commitment of our partners fulfills the obligation to support the healthcare needs of Connecticut residents led by a data-informed nursing workforce,” said Lisa Sundean, RN, MSN, MA, PhD(c), director of the CNC-AC and Kimberly Sandor, RN, MSN, FNP, executive director of the Connecticut Nurses Association.

Nurses comprise the largest portion of the healthcare workforce nationally. Their numbers have a significant impact on consumers’ access to care and patient outcomes. A better understanding of the nursing workforce is crucial for decision-making about employment in different healthcare settings, diversification of the nursing workforce in relation to population diversity, deployment of nurses in areas of high healthcare need, decision-making about nursing education, and preparation of nursing faculty.

This interprofessional, collaborative partnership to manage and analyze nursing workforce data is historic in Connecticut and nationally, and demonstrates a vital link to population health and state labor force economics, Sundean said.

Marcia Proto, M.Ed, executive director of the Connecticut League for Nursing and the Connecticut Center for Nursing Workforce added, “The CNC-AC has developed positive working relationships with nursing and non-nursing partners in Connecticut and around the country. Through these relationships we have aligned our talents and resources to address nursing workforce issues across all healthcare settings in the state.”

The CNC-AC is one of 51 state Action Coalitions in every state and the District of Columbia, part of the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action, an initiative of the AARP Foundation, AARP and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The Campaign for Action aims to improve the health of populations through a strong, diverse nursing workforce. CNC-AC is committed to convening a wide range of partnerships, influencing broadly, and facilitating activities that aim toward improved health of citizens statewide. CNC-AC is a project of the Connecticut Nurses Foundation and the Connecticut Nurses Association and works in close collaboration with the Connecticut League for Nursing. Partnerships between CNC-AC and state agencies demonstrate the commitment of the State of Connecticut to achieving healthier communities through nursing, the most trusted profession in the country.

A Culture of Health is the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) vision for America—a culture in which we as a nation strive to build healthier communities, where promoting health is as important as treating illness, and where all members of our diverse society lead healthier lives now and for generations to come.

Nurses are on the front lines in every town and city, well-positioned to promote and help build a Culture of Health. The Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action is making sure nurses are an integral part of the RWJF vision. On July 23, 2015 the Campaign’s key stakeholders—including retailers like Best Buy and big-city public health leaders—came together to discuss how they are creating a Culture of Health and how it fits together with efforts to improve health and health care through nursing. Read more about this event and view photos from the meeting.

RWJF’s interim vice president of program portfolios, Michelle Larkin, JD, MS, RN, spoke about the Foundation’s Culture of Health. Watch her presentation below.

The Campaign for Action also brought in a discussion panel to share ways different organizations are creating a Culture of Health. Watch their panel below.

The Culture of Health in Action discussion panel included:

Tools Discussed During the Culture of Health in Action presentation:

Livability Index
The Livability Index is a signature initiative of the AARP Public Policy Institute to measure the quality of life in American communities across multiple dimensions: housing, transportation, neighborhood characteristics, environment, health, opportunity, and civic and social engagement.

County Health Rankings & Roadmaps
The County Health Rankings & Roadmaps program is a collaboration between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute. The goals of the program are to: build awareness of the multiple factors that influence health; provide a reliable, sustainable source of local data to communities to help them identify opportunities to improve their health; engage and activate local leaders from many sectors in creating sustainable community change; and connect & empower community leaders working to improve health.

You did it – your Action Coalition successfully engaged another stakeholder, but now you must make the most of their commitment.

With over 340 organizations as members, the Texas Action Coalition has a well-designed system to ensure new stakeholders are welcomed and engaged with immediate calls-to-action. To do this, the Texas Team uses a Coalition Membership Model in which organizations join at no cost.

Coalition Membership Model

  • Organizations complete an application.  Applicants are provided an application and a document that describes what they are committing to by joining (Both resources attached). Also attached, is a shorter “business application” that the Texas Action Coalition uses for some non-healthcare businesses.
  • Application is submitted and processed.  The application is sent to a central email address where a central Action Coalition member processes. The organization is added to the Coalition membership list (resource attached). The new member is added to the appropriate region and their email is added to the distribution list to receive communications from the Texas Team.
  • Send welcome email.  This email (resources attached) includes:
    • A membership list with their organization added
    • An orientation to the Campaign for Action website and Texas state page
    • A call to “like” the Texas Team on Facebook and add the logo to their email salutation
    • A carbon copy (CC) of the email to Regional Team leads.
  • The Regional Nurse Leaders reach out.  Regional leaders contact new organizations (in most cases, they usually recruit the organization in the first place) and integrate the new organizations into the regional work.
