The Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action is a national initiative working toward an America in which everyone can live a healthier life, supported by nurses as essential partners in providing care and promoting health equity and well-being. Action Coalitions, led by nurses and their champions from business, education, healthcare delivery, and other sectors, carry out the work of the Campaign at the state, local and regional level. Active in most states and the District of Columbia, Action Coalitions mobilize diverse stakeholders to create innovative solutions with nurses leading the way to build healthier communities, improve well-being, and develop pathways for health equity. Action Coalitions focus on advancing policy leadership, diversifying nursing, transforming education, strengthening collaborations, and activating the field to disseminate and implement the National Academy of Medicine’s report, The Future of Nursing 2020-2030 Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity.

The Action Coalition co-lead and key contacts list is updated regularly. The last update to the document was on June 11, 2025.

Recommended Criteria for Diversity Action Plans

The Campaign encourages all Action Coalitions to develop diversity action plans using the criteria listed. This document outlines potential goals to help in this work. Resources might limit what a state can do, but with flexibility it’s possible to create and implement at least elements of these plans.

Jonas Scholar: A Valuable Resource

The Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action is excited to make available for you a valuable resource for your Action Coalition work.

You may have heard of Jonas Scholars. They’re registered nurses working on their PhD or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). These nurse scholars are required to complete a leadership project that incorporates recommendations from the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health.

Coalition Member Engagement Resources

On January 12 and 13, 2015, the Center to Champion Nursing in America hosted a Volunteer and Coalition Member Engagement and Management Workshop. Objectives of the meeting included:

Understand factors that contribute to successful volunteer and coalition member engagement and management in a variety of contexts;
Identify strengths and opportunities for growth in AC engagement and management of volunteers and coalition members;
Develop volunteer and coalition member engagement and management skills/strategies, including the use of e-tools;
Develop a written plan that includes three concrete actions that ACs will take to build volunteer engagement and management capacity.
