Bolstering Workforce Data

Planning for fundamental, wide-ranging changes in the preparation and deployment of the nursing workforce will require comprehensive data on the numbers and types of professionals currently available and required to meet future needs.

Data is needed across all health professions if a fundamental transformation of the health care system is to be achieved. Major gaps exist in currently available workforce data.

To create the nursing workforce required to transform health care will require a paradigm shift in the framework and context used to prepare and deploy the RN workforce and to forecast future requirements.  Our lack of consistent and comparable local, state, and national nursing workforce data delays implementation of policy initiatives to address the future needs.  We are working to create a national picture of nursing workforce supply information and to project future demand for nurses.
