Nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training. So said the Institute of Medicine in its recommendation, and so says the evidence, which shows that consumers have better access to high-quality care when nurses have the authority to provide the care for which they were trained. Join expert Joanne Spetz, PhD, FAAN, director of the University of California, San Francisco Health Workforce Research Center, as she reviews evidence gathered since the 2010 IOM report came out. Practical effects of improved laws include lower costs, fewer hospital readmissions, and higher satisfaction among family members.
