Champions of Nursing: Kaiser Permanente

Kaiser Permanente, one of the country’s leading health care providers and not-for-profit health plans, is a true “Champion of Nursing.” It has a deep commitment to improving the health of people and communities, and it supports the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action’s efforts to transform health care in several important ways. Marilyn Chow, PhD, RN, FAAN, vice president for patient care services, Kaiser Permanente, is one of the 12 leaders who serve on the Campaign’s Strategic Advisory Committee. This distinguished group of business, health care, and education leaders shapes the strategic vision for the Campaign and serves as its chief ambassadors.

Kaiser Permanente is also a member of the Campaign’s Champion Nursing Coalition, a diverse group of national business, consumer, and health professional organizations that support the Campaign in a variety of ways.

The organization’s National Nursing Leadership Council, which comprises senior leaders from across Kaiser Permanente and is co-chaired by Dr. Chow, created a position statement in support of the recommendations in the Institute of Medicine’s landmark report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health. The evidence-based recommendations in the IOM report, which is celebrating its third anniversary this fall, are what drive the work of the Campaign.

“Kaiser Permanente nurse leaders are actively involved within their regions with the Action Coalitions.  It has been exciting to see the coordination of efforts within these regions.” said Stephanie Leach, a member of the California Action Coalition’s advisory committee and a national nursing policy consultant at Kaiser Permanente. “We are excited about the Campaign’s continued focus on education and its forward-looking focus on leadership, which is a priority for Kaiser Permanente and an important part of successfully providing high-quality health care to patients and their families.”

The Campaign is honored to have the support of Nurse Champion Kaiser Permanente as we work together to transform health care through nursing.
